They're a family!

They're a family!
Originally uploaded by Caffrin.
I was at a salon in Greenwich Village this weekend, visiting a friend. I noticed this line of three nearly-identical pairs of Ugg boots near the front of the store. My first impulse was to say something snarky to my friend and to snap this photo. The store's owner noticed me looking at the shoes, smiled and said, "Look, they're a family!" In that moment I desperately wanted to be the type of person who doesn't rush to judgment, but instead finds familial connections in a row of last year's trendy "It" shoes.

Favorite things???? I'll show you favorite things....

1) The Sun Room. On Sunday, when the sky was a vivid blue, light reflected from the ripples in the pool displayed matching white-on-white ripples on the ceiling of the Sun Room as we read peacefully. It doesn't get much better than that.

2) Music, in its remarkable variety, and its mystical power to calm and relax. As we read, I listened to classical guitar on my iPod without disturbing another reader less enchanted by classical guitar. Later we both listened to City of Angels on the stereo (best lyric: "Truth to tell, L.A. isn't much different than a pretty girl with the clap.")

3) The Internet. Information about almost anything, almost instantly. I read a book that made reference to the remarkable French diplomat Talleyrand, so I Googled him and found (1) his career was even more remarkable than I thought; (2)an image which showed that he pretty much resembled the physical description of the book; and (3) an image of his wife (also described fairly accurately in the book). Those who grow up with such information resources readily available live in a very different world than when I was young, and would have needed an afternoon in an extensive library to approach the same level of information that Google turns up in a few minutes, at home.

4) Cheap long distance. It rocks to be able to talk to Elizabeth P. in Florida, and Catherine C. in Illinois, and John C. in California, to say nothing in particular, because the cost is essentially irrelevant. So, call often.

A few of my favorite things.

1. I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning. one of Bright Eyes' two new albums. It's a few notes shy of perfect (never thought I'd say this, but it's possible that an album can have too much Emmylou Harris), but as John C. wisely summarized, there's no question that Coner Oberst is a real talent.
2. Sudafed Sinus Allergy. The only thing that's kept me functioning this week.
3. Global warming. 54 degrees in February? Don't mind if I do!

Bad Moon Rising

There is no doubt now that Hurricane Ivan will hit the Northern Gulf Coast, almost certainly at Mobile. The expected track of the storm shows a leisurely drive up I-65 from Mobile to Birmingham, then a slight right turn to take I-59 toward Chattanooga.

Pat C's house on Dauphin Island is in grave danger, and he has prudently evacuated to Sheila C's condo in Mobile. We can follow the meteorological data from Station DPIA1 - Dauphin Island, AL, the remote weather station at the eastern end of the island.

Birmingham expects tropical storm force winds by 6:00 am Thursday, rising to Category 1 hurricane force winds by midday Thursday. The Tiny Kingdom is not especially vulnerable to flooding, but wind damage is likely to be very severe, with probable power outages. However, predicting over several hundred miles and more than 24 hours is uncertain. Again, keep fingers crossed.

Memorable Excursions III

It was the spring of 1987. The clan had just watched a spring training ballgame between the Cards and the Mets game at the beautiful Al Lang Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. Exiting the stadium, we five stepped out onto the streetcorner to find Mookie Wilson, still in uniform and signing autographs for but a smattering of fans.

If it is true that there was a pen in your purse, and if it is true that it would have taken you just three seconds to look for it, and if it is true that Mookie's autograph would have been a treasure I would have held dear to this day, you are forgiven.
